Passenger / Load Limit
16' Canoe = 850 lbs limit. Can hold up to 6 passengers
Kayak = 700 lbs limit. Can hold two passengers
What are the advantages of the canoe vs the kayak, and vice versa?
The canoe can hold more passengers and luggage or supplies. The kayak can navigate through the rapids a little easier.
How much time should be alloted to build a Trailcraft canoe or kayak?
On average it will take 2 or 3 people a solid 3 -day weekend to complete the craft. This is with moderate to advanced knowledge of wood-working. For a person who has never done this before, you would need a few additional days as you work with the learning curve and gain your wood-working skills.
After the canoe is constructed, what annual/regular mainenance is required to maintain the canoe?
Wash it out after use. Store in a dry shed, or cover with a tarp. Keep out of the sun when being stored. Refinish every two seasons if used frequently.
What tools are need to build the canoe or kayak?
A recommended checklist is as follows:
Screwdriver
Hammer
Hand or power drill
3/16 and 3/32 drill bits
hand saw or coping saw
wood rasp
power sander
80-220 grit sandpaper
1/4" or 5/16" staples or carpet tacks
Four C clamps
Vice grip pliers
Staple gun
saber or hack saw
metal cutting file
As a ballpark, how much could you anticipate needing to spend on materials?
Assuming you already have the tools mentioned above, you would need to spend approximately $50 - $60 on materials. If you choose to seal the canvas in fiberglass instead of paint, you would need to add another $50 - $70.
